About KDE Extragear

The Extragear is a collection of KDE applications that are associated with the KDE project. Those apps are not part of the main KDE distribution for various reasons, but they are still part of the project. This gives them higher visibility to Translators and Documentation Writers.

There are multiple possible reasons for an application to not be in one of the KDE modules, for example:

  • duplication of functionality
  • very specialized (like Kile)

All applications in the extragear modules can be released independently by their own maintainers or in the KDE release cycle in a special per-category tarball made by Extragear's current maintainer. The current proposition is have at least one package per-category which compiles against current KDE release and have the last stable or bugfix branch releases defined by apps maintainers. There is a certain release process for applications in the Extragear.

This info wil be used to help packagers and generate the special packages for distribution If there is no i18n strings freeze and no release date then an app will not be translated - simple as that! Please note that the feature freeze is optional but recommended.

If you had a look at how the Extragear is organized, the current layout is based on categories, and new application will fit on their right place. If a module growns in number of apps to become to large, a subsequent "category"-"n" module will be created and so on.
